Abraham Colles

Abraham Colles, 1773 - 1843, was a prominent Irish surgeon who taught in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland for 32 years and was President of the College in 1802.

He was one of the College's most illustrious members. He was born in Millmount near Kilkenny. After receiving his licence from the College, he went to Edinburgh and London. He returned as surgeon to Dr Steevens' Hospital and was shortly afterwards appointed to both the chairs of Surgery and Anatomy at the R.C.S.I.

Colles is remembered today for the common fracture of the wrist known as the 'Colles' fracture and in anatomy some of his original discoveries bear his name - 'Colles' fascia' and 'Colles' ligament'.
